What this is
Matcha is an open-source Minecraft 1.8.9 client. The client, the matching server, the presence backend, the build tooling and the installer all live in one public repository, under a licence that lets you read, modify and redistribute them.
Who it is for
Players who want a focused set of PvP and quality-of-life mods without a store attached. People who would rather run software they can inspect. Anyone who wants cosmetics without paying for them, and anyone who would like to make some.
What it deliberately is not
It is not a replacement for your launcher. It is not trying to have the most mods, or support the most Minecraft versions, or beat established clients on polish. Those are real advantages that Lunar and Badlion have earned, and pretending otherwise would be easy to disprove.
It is also not a business. There is nothing to buy, no rank to upgrade to, and no account to create. That is a deliberate constraint rather than a stage the project is waiting to grow out of.
How it is built
Development happens in public. Features arrive as pull requests, discussion happens in issues, and releases are tagged with notes. If you want to know why something works the way it does, the commit that made it work that way is available.

Getting involved
Cosmetics need artists, the client needs Java developers, the backend needs Rust developers, and all of it needs people willing to report what is broken. Thecontributing guide is the place to start, and thelicence explains what you are allowed to do with the result.
